Over 16,000 people have signed a petition demanding that Victoria’s Secret apologize for and amend an advertising campaign for their new “Body” line. The campaign features 10 thin models with the slogan, “The Perfect Body” stamped over it. As you can imagine women everywhere, including us, are outraged by the lack of body diversity featured in the ad and more importantly the narrow-minded definition of the perfect body insinuated by the advertisement.
Help put a stop to this irresponsible advertising by signing this Change.org petition now!
Victoria’s Secret is an industry leader and has the ability to empower, inspire and celebrate women. This campaign does the exact opposite. It is not socially responsible and we need to stop supporting organizations that sell their products in this way. We love seeing everyone stand up for their perfect bodies by tweeting to Victoria’s Secret using the hashtag #IAMPERFECT.
Decrying the idea of perfection, @TarinaP tweeted ” #iamperfect there Is beauty in diversity. Across the continents there are gorgeous women, all differ from the next. This is a celebration.”
We love this campaign, Dear Kate pulled together to challenge Victoria’s Secrets definition of “the perfect body”. Their website reads, “As if women need a reminder of our society’s homogenous definition of beauty, the ad features ten models with almost identical body shapes. The creators of
the ad probably didn’t think twice about the message it is sending, and to us, it’s irresponsible marketing.”
It’s time for all companies to take a more responsible approach to their advertising but until they do we have to speak up and demand the change. Please sign the petition and then send your message to @VictoriasSecret with the hashtag #IAMPERFECT.
